Massoud Barzani's son and the chairman of the Iraqi Kurdistan Security Council, expressed his concern about Baghdad's positions towards the Kurdish separatist referendum and have asked Washington to assist Kurdistan.

Mr. Barzani emphasized on the need for Washington's support of the Iraqi Kurdistan.
"We had to be independent because Iraqi governments violated many constitutional provisions.", he wrote to Washington Post about the Kurdish separatist referendum.

According to Barzani, Iraqi Prime Minister, Haydar al-Abbadi, had "taken dangerous measures to punish the Kurds."
The chairman of the Iraqi Kurdistan Security Council also stressed that after the referendum, "Kurdistan (Iraq) is now looking for opening the doors of dialogue (with Baghdad) based on mutual respect."
"The United States must support its allies and reduce tensions (caused by the referendum). No other country is in a better position than the United States (to support and reduce tensions). I'm worried about US passivity, given the military threats facing Kurdistan (Iraq). ", he added.
