For the first time, Palestinians abroad publicly criticise the Palestinian Authority

For the first time since its establishment in 2017, the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad has issued a direct and explicit criticism of the Palestinian Authority (PA). This comes after the PA’s actions in the occupied West Bank, particularly in Jenin and its refugee camp, reached an intolerable level.
The heartbreaking images of young Palestinians being humiliated, forced under torture to chant slogans in support of Mahmoud Abbas, and even being shot with live bullets, cross all red lines. These obscene violations confirm the futility of any attempt to reconcile with a PA leadership that has chosen security coordination with the Israeli occupation as its permanent strategy and competes to demonstrate loyalty to the occupier at the expense of the people and their cause.
Since its inception, the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad has focused on uniting Palestinian efforts while steering clear of political disputes. It has prioritised highlighting the suffering of Palestinians, particularly in the diaspora, and supporting their resilience in the homeland. However, the atrocities committed in the West Bank under the guise of “maintaining order” have compelled the Conference to break its silence.
This time, the criticism was unequivocal and direct, reflected in a petition endorsed by the Conference under the banner “Palestinian blood is a red line.” The petition strongly condemned the PA’s suppression, arrests, and targeted killings of resistance fighters in the West Bank. It also called for an immediate end to security coordination with the Israeli occupation as a critical step in the fight against it.

What stands out is that this criticism reflects a growing sense of frustration among Palestinians abroad, who have long stood in solidarity with their brethren at home, providing both material and moral support to strengthen their resilience. However, witnessing the PA’s actions against resistance fighters and its blatant complacency with the occupation has left many feeling betrayed, as if their efforts are being squandered on a path that undermines the cause.
The shift in tone also signifies a growing awareness among Palestinians abroad that the PA can no longer be trusted as a partner in the Palestinian struggle. Instead of fostering national unity, the PA has become a source of division, using its security apparatus to protect the occupation rather than its own people.
The Popular Conference’s bold criticism represents an evolution in the consciousness of Palestinian communities in the diaspora. They now recognise that remaining silent about the PA’s actions is tantamount to complicity in the erosion of the Palestinian cause. With mounting challenges—including intensified settlement expansion, plans for annexation and displacement, and the ongoing genocide in Gaza—ignoring the PA’s complicity is no longer an option.
This stance reaffirms the necessity of separating the Palestinian national project from the PA’s grip and working toward creating an inclusive national framework that confronts the occupation without the constraints of security coordination or the PA’s self-preservation agenda.
The PA’s project, along with that of Fatah, which provides its legitimacy, has proven entirely futile. This is not merely due to Israel’s Knesset repeatedly rejecting the notion of a Palestinian state or the rampant settlement expansion even in “Area B” under the Oslo Accords, nor solely due to annexation and displacement plans. The failure is evident in the inability to deliver anything resembling a viable political solution. For two decades, Palestinians were told to allow Abbas to try his project. The abysmal results are now a testament to its catastrophic failure.
It is tragic to find ourselves in a position where we must criticise the Palestinian leadership instead of uniting all efforts against the Israeli occupation. Yet, national duty demands this overdue confrontation. The time has come to correct the course and redirect the compass towards the real enemy: the Israeli occupation.
Through this courageous and daring step, the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad has opened the door for broader discussions on the roles of the PA, Fatah, and the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) in their historic responsibilities toward the Palestinian people and their cause. This initiative could mark the beginning of a national awakening that reshuffles Palestinian priorities and forces these entities to change their approach—or face gradual isolation and marginalisation by the people, both at home and abroad. In time, they may become obsolete obstacles removed from the path towards liberation.
