Greek naval cadets have been seen insulting Turkiye and claiming ownership of Cyprus, in an incident which has drawn condemnation and prompted calls for the government to launch an investigation.
In a video circulating online this week, a detachment of the Permanent Non-Commissioned Officers’ School (SMYN) of the Greek Navy can be seen conducting a parade in the centre of the capital Athens, during which they chant nationalist slogans including “f*ck Turkiye” and “Cyprus is Greek”.
The viral footage reportedly drew sharp condemnation from both the Greek government and the country’s military leadership, with Turkiye also having demanded an explanation for the incident.
According to media reports, the cadets in question and the head of the school are expected to be questioned and disciplined by the armed forces’ leadership.
The incident was also condemned by Greek political parties and figures, with the main opposition party Syriza stating in a press release that “the unacceptable incident should be investigated and answers provided.”
Saying that “nationalist crowns and lack of discipline alone do not guarantee power”, the party remarked that “with a government that is in retreat and cannot control even the most basic things, nothing surprises us anymore.”
