Algeria yesterday declared the Moroccan Deputy Consul in Oran, Mohamed Sefiani, “persona non grata” and has given him 48 hours to leave the country.

In a statement, the Algerian Foreign Ministry said that Khalid Chihani, the acting head of the Moroccan Consulate General in Algeria, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There, he was received by the Director-General of Protocol, Mokhtar Amine Khelif.

The ministry added that Khalif informed Chihani that “the Deputy Consul General of Morocco in Oran, Mohamed Sefiani, is considered persona non grata, with the obligation to leave the national territory within a maximum of 48 hours.”

The Algerian ministry clarified that the decision was based on “suspicious actions by Sefiani that were incompatible with the nature of his duties” at the Moroccan Consulate in Oran, actions which it said violated Algerian and international laws, particularly the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

No details were provided as to what the actions were.

There’s been no comment from Morocco following Algeria’s decision.

Algeria severed diplomatic relations with Morocco on 24 August 2021, citing what it described as hostile actions that threatened the country’s stability.

Tensions between the two nations have escalated over the past five years, particularly regarding the issue of the Western Sahara region. Morocco proposes wide autonomy for the region under its sovereignty, while the Polisario Front advocates for a self-determination referendum, a position backed by Algeria, which hosts refugees from the area.
