Amnesty International has warned that the conditions faced by Palestinian women and girls in the Gaza Strip represent one of the most severe forms of discrimination and violence against women amid the ongoing war and the collapse of healthcare services.

In a statement, the organisation said Israeli attacks and the widespread destruction of infrastructure have severely affected essential healthcare systems, particularly services related to reproductive health.

Amnesty cited findings by a United Nations Commission of Inquiry, which concluded in March 2025 that Israel had systematically used sexual, reproductive and other forms of gender-based violence against Palestinians.

The organisation said the destruction of reproductive health facilities and restrictions on access to basic medical care could amount to acts of genocide, according to the commission’s findings.

It also referred to a September 2025 assessment by the same UN body, which stated that Israel may have committed acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip, including through measures that could prevent births.

Amnesty linked these conclusions to its own December 2024 report, which documented killings, severe physical and psychological harm, and living conditions imposed on Palestinians that the organisation said were designed to destroy the population in Gaza, either in whole or in part, including through gender-related harm.

The rights group said it continues to document violations alongside women human rights defenders and feminist organisations, calling for accountability and increased international support for Palestinian women and girls.

Amnesty also warned that the situation reflects a broader global trend, which it said is seeing setbacks in gender equality, including growing attacks on reproductive rights, restrictions on feminist advocacy and reduced funding for women’s rights organisations worldwide.
